It is our hope
that you will find the manual useful throughout your work with students
and assistive technology.
Referral Process
Assistive Technology
Centre
-
Student’s name is
brought before the school Program Planning Team for possible referral to
the Assistive Technology Centre. Program Support Teacher, classroom teacher
or parent may refer students, but the referral must go through the Program
Planning Team at the school level.
-
The Assistive
Technology Centre referral form, located in the Student Services binder,
should be filled out. (A sample form is included in this document.)
-
Ensure the form is
sent to Student Services (Sarah Jane Collins, Board Office – 541-3021 or
fax 541-3059) by the Monday prior to the Community of Schools meeting.
-
Action plans for all
referrals received are formulated at the Community of Schools meeting.
Actions may include:
-
Assessment done with
the student at the centre. It is important that a representative
from the school * be present
for this assessment. Parents may attend as well.
-
Observation done with
the student at the centre. It is important that a representative
from the school * be present
for the observation. Parents may attend as well.
*
We
request that someone from the school be present at the assessments/observations
for the following reasons:
-
To provide additional
information about the student
-
To observe the student
working with the assistive technology
-
To discuss the technology
that may be recommended for the student.
-
To discuss ways of
integrating the assistive technology into the curriculum
-
To receive loaned
assistive technology when appropriate
-
Shortly after the
Community of Schools meeting, an appointment for the student will be arranged
with the school.
-
Reports will be written
up and given to the Student Development Coordinators at the next Student
Services meeting for distribution to the schools. Included in the
reports will be descriptions of all the hardware and/or software recommended.
-
When you receive the
report, the Assistive Technology Coordinator will review the report with
the parents and the Program Planning Team.
-
Within a month of
the PPT and report review, the Assistive Technology Centre PSA will meet
with the school personnel to assist in the implementation of the recommendations.
